Are you moving to Tanzania and in particular Dar es Salaam from the Netherlands or Belgium?
If so, as a Dutch speaker, it is definitely worth reading this article.
I am Ibrahim, and I know exactly how challenging such a move can be.
I myself once made the jump from Tanzania to the Netherlands, and while that is not a one-to-one comparison, I understand like no other the culture shock that can await you.
Life in Dar es Salaam is vastly different from what you’re used to in the Netherlands or Belgium, and those changes can be both exciting and overwhelming.
Whether it’s finding your way around town, the language barrier, or simply getting used to a different way of doing things-I’ve experienced it all myself, but the other way around.
This article aims to inform and reassure you about what to expect when moving to Dar es Salaam.
Safety is an important aspect of this, and I understand that it can be one of your biggest concerns.
With my local knowledge, I will help you choose the safest routes and neighborhoods, and give you tips on how to move around the city safely.
My goal is to make sure you quickly feel at home in this beautiful but sometimes chaotic city.
From arranging practical matters to helping you navigate the cultural differences, I am here to guide you.
I would love to help you make your stay and the start of your introduction to Tanzania a success!

Living in Tanzania: Challenges and opportunities

Life in Tanzania offers much beauty and adventure, but for white people it can also present some challenges, especially in finding your way, both literally and figuratively.
It is a country with a unique culture and customs that can sometimes take some getting used to, especially since, as a white person, you are often treated in a different way than the locals.
This difference usually stems from economic circumstances: it is a well-known phenomenon that white people, or “mzungus” as you are often called, usually pay more than black people for the same services or products.
This can range from cab rides to market purchases and even when arranging housing.
This difference is not so much a matter of color, but rather perception around financial ability.
Therefore, it’s helpful to know how to move in this dynamic to avoid overpaying unnecessarily or dealing with confusion about prices and services.
This is where I can help you.
Through my experience and knowledge of both Dutch and Tanzanian culture, I can guide you to move more easily and comfortably in Dar es Salaam, without these challenges.

What makes Dar es Salaam special?

Dar es Salaam means “House of Peace” and is a bustling city on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
Despite Dodoma officially being the capital, Dar es Salaam remains the beating heart of the country and is considered the main gateway to Tanzania, with its vast natural parks (national park e.g.) and the famous island of Zanzibar.
The city itself offers a combination of modern amenities and traditional African charm.
With about six million inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in this remarkable country and the country’s main port.
